You Probably Don't Need a Protein Supplement. Here's Why.
From my experience in the gym setting, someone will at some point mention protein and the need to supplement. Which brand. How many scoops. With water or milk, and argue over the optimal window to consume it.
The supplement industry is a marketing monster, using fear, community, social influence and peer pressure to sell their products.
The truth is, for so many of us - we simply do not need it.

Here is what is actually happening inside your body right now.
You have approximately 100 grams of free amino acids circulating in your blood and tissues at any given time. This is your amino acid pool - a constantly replenishing reserve selectively used throughout the day. Amino acids help to build and repair muscle tissue. They produce hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters. They support immune function and cell repair. All of this happens continuously, around the clock, whether you have had a shake or not.
The pool is replenished in two ways. From the protein you eat - broken down through digestion and absorbed into the bloodstream. And from the natural breakdown and rebuilding of your own body's protein structures, which happens constantly. The continuous cycle of both together is called protein turnover. In a healthy adult the body turns over roughly 250-300 grams of protein per day through this process - which is why the amino acid pool stays topped up even between meals. Even during an overnight fast, your body maintains this pool. Cells and tissues have continuous access to amino acids for protein synthesis without interruption.
So what actually depletes it? Not a gym session. Not skipping a post-workout shake. Not training fasted.
Genuine depletion - and depletion is a strong word - occurs in exceptional circumstances. Severe trauma or burns. Major surgery and post-surgical recovery. Serious infection or sepsis. Prolonged starvation. Cancer and chemotherapy. Sustained overtraining combined with chronically inadequate food intake.
For the vast majority of people training two to four times a week and eating reasonably well, the pool is doing its job without assistance.
What does matter is your daily protein total. The current evidence suggests 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day for active adults over 40. For an 80kg person that is 96 to 128 grams. Spread across three or four meals with a decent protein source at each - chicken, eggs, fish, dairy, legumes, tofu - and you will hit that target through food alone.
One note for those over 60. Muscle protein synthesis efficiency does decrease modestly with age, so protein requirements sit at the higher end of that range. Still achievable through food. Just worth being deliberate about it.
If your diet has genuine gaps - you are travelling, your appetite is low, your schedule makes cooking difficult - a supplement is a practical convenience. But convenience is all it is.
The training is doing the work. The protein gives it something to build with. You do not need an expensive supplement to make that happen.
